There are three types of card which show that you are a student and a member of NUS;
If you need an NUS number (e.g. to claim an online discount) the card you need will depend on the retailer. Retailers and services involved in the NUS Extra scheme will only accept an NUS Extra card number, for others you can use the NUS Democracy card number. None of the numbers on your Sussex/BSMS library card are related to NUS
Any full USSU member is automatically an NUS member and entitled to an NUS Extra and/or NUS Democracy card. If you are not sure if you qualify for a card please email reception@ussu.sussex.ac.uk
NUS Extra is the new discount card from NUS (National Union of Students) which has a range of exclusive discounts, offers and competitions. Here you can find out about the discounts on offer, how to buy your card and why it will cost you £10.
NUS Extra have teamed up with some of the biggest names in retailing and on the net to bring you bargains and big discounts on a wide range of things. They’re constantly updating their offers, so check out the website for the full list - www.nusextra.co.uk.
Only students can buy NUS Extra cards. You can find out more about the card and buy it online at www.nusextra.co.uk. Your NUS Extra card is valid until 31st October 2008 giving you a whole year of savings for only £10.
Student Unions nationally decided to charge £10 for the NUS discount card to make some much needed money to support the work of NUS (such as national campaigns for students) and Students’ Unions. The money we make from NUS Extra cards goes to supporting our services in the same way that the money we make from our shops and bars supports things like sport, advice, campaigns, training and all the other things we do. NUS Extra has more discounts and benefits than the old discount card so it should save you even more money than before.
It is likely that shops and services not involved in the scheme will continue to offer discounts to students showing their student ID, e.g. your Sussex student card. Most companies involved in NUS Extra such as Amazon, PC World & JJB Sports will not give a discount to non-NUS Extra members. A couple, such as TopShop & HMV will continue to offer a student discount but will offer an additional discount to NUS Extra cardholders. We suggest you look at the full list of discounts and offers available at www.nusextra.co.uk and decide if your £10 will be a worthwhile investment.
