Over the years, generations of Sussex students have taken part in campaigns that have changed the world – and many that are still being fought today. From the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, to the campaign for gay rights, to the fight over university tuition fees, we have earned the university a proud reputation as a hub of political debate and activity, whose influence extends far beyond the boundaries of our campus.

Today there is just as much need for students to stand up and be counted, and at Sussex we continue to defy the myth that students are apathetic. In January 2009, a student sit-in against the Israeli attack on Gaza received national press coverage and won the creation of four new scholarships for Palestinian students. In March Sussex students were instrumental in organising a national demonstration for free education – an issue that will be even higher on the agenda this year with the government set to consider tuition fees of £7,000 a year. Meanwhile government funding cuts will threaten the very existence of our university; the planet faces the possibility of catastrophic climate change; and racism is on the increase as minorities are scapegoated for the consequences of the economic crisis.

The students’ union is proud to support and lead campaigns on issues like these. As a democratic organisation, the union is in your hands. Our Annual General Meeting on November 19th is open to all students to debate the priorities for the coming year, and there are elections throughout the year for the elected officers who lead the union and other important positions.

Our strength lies in our membership, and it is when large numbers of people come together, on campus and beyond, that we have the best chance of achieving change. You can find out more about getting involved by emailing president@ussu.sussex.ac.uk.

Past campaigns

Eco-Uni - This focused on two key areas. The first was the improvement of Sussex’s environmental performance, concentrating especially on its contribution to climate change. The second was to use the university’s role as an educational institution to raise awareness of the issue, foster creative thinking and ideas, and ensure that those ideas lead to action.

Sussex Not For Sale - University education in the UK is undergoing a radical transformation. Funding is massively restricted by the government, which is forcing Universities to look for external sources of income and the outsourcing teaching provision to cut costs. The quality of services is getting worse. It has meant more, not less managers, a lot more paperwork and it definitely doesn’t make our institutions more ethical. Education Not For Sale aimed to counter creeping privatisation by working together with staff to launch a campaign to resist the changes forced on us from the top. It aimed to resist further encroachment of private companies in core HE teaching on campus, raising awareness about the ways in which privatisation is detrimental to our education system.
