The Union is a charity, funded in a variety of ways. Firstly, the University makes a contribution to the running of Union services through a block grant. However, this funding is not enough to run all the services the Union offers, and the Union therefore runs a trading company (University of Sussex Students' Union Trading Ltd, or USSU Trading Ltd) which is in charge of Union bars, shops and marketing. Part of the National Union of Students' purchasing consortium, (NUSSL or NUS Services ltd) SUSUS is able to offer cheap goods and usually still make enough profit to subsidise some Union services.
The Union's income from the University and USSU Trading is used yearly by elected officers to create the Union's budget, which students must agree to at the AGM.

This colourful pie-chart shows roughly where Union money was spent in the 2004-5 academic year.

The company had a very good year in 2004-5 which meant that the Union's expected £80,000 deficit was cleared. It also allowed for a substantial 'priorities fund' to be created for 2005-6 which supplements the Union's base budget.
